Lung and Systemic Inflammation in COPD

چکیده
Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is a nuclear transcription factor first recognized in 1986 by Sen and Baltimore. Its name derives from the fact that it was first diagnosed in the nuclei of B cells [13] bound to an enhancer element of the immunoglobulin kappa light chain gene [4]. At that time, NF-κB was primarily thought to be a B-cell–specific transcription factor, but it was afterward found to be present in every cell type [5]. NF-κB has been implicated in the regulation of host inflammatory [6-8] and immune responses [9-11], cell adhesion [12], developmental signals [13], cell proliferation, differentiation [14, 15] and in defending cells from apoptosis [16, 17]. In addition, it plays important roles in cellular growth properties by encoding cytokines, chemokines and receptors required for neutrophil adhesion and migration, thus increasing the expression of specific cellular genes [18].

The Relationship between the Severity of Airway Obstruction and COPD Diagnostic Questionnaire Score in COPD Patients
Background & objectives: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by irreversible airflow limitation and systemic inflammation which is also associated with pulmonary and extra-pulmonary complications. COPD Diagnostic Questionnaire (CDQ) is a valid questionnaire that is used to identify patients with COPD. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between ...
متن کاملEffects of conjugated linoleic acid supplementation on serum levels of interleukin-6 and sirtuin 1 in COPD patients
Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by systemic inflammation and accelerated inflammaging of the lungs. Some studies showed that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of CLA supplementationon serum levels of interleukin (IL)-6 and sirtuin1 (SIRT1) in patients wit...
متن کاملEffect of vitamin C on tracheal responsiveness and pulmonary inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease model of guinea pig
Introduction: In the present study, the prophylactic effect of vitamin C, as a potent anti-oxidant, on tracheal responsiveness to methacholine and ovalbumin, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid white blood cell (WBC) count and differential count, and also lung pathology in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) -guinea pigs (cigarette exposed guinea pigs) were examined. In addition, the relax...
متن کاملNeurohumoral activation as a link to systemic manifestations of chronic lung disease.
COPD is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Treatment of COPD improves lung function but is unlikely to slow the steady downhill course of the disease or reduce mortality. In COPD, numerous abnormalities can be found outside the lung. These include systemic inflammation, cachexia, and skeletal muscle dysfunction. Thus, COPD has been called a systemic disease. Convincing data demons...
متن کاملSystemic Inflammation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: May Diet Play a Therapeutic Role?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive and irreversible airflow limitation, impaired quality of life and increased mortality. It is the fourth-leading cause of chronic morbidity and mortality worldwide. Prevalence is projected to increase due to smoke exposure and the changing age structure of the world population. It is accompanied by chronic inflammation ...
متن کاملSystemic Inflammation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: May Adipose Tissue Play a Role? Review of the Literature and Future Perspectives
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Low-grade systemic inflammation is considered a hallmark of COPD that potentially links COPD to increased rate of systemic manifestations of the disease. Obesity with/without the metabolic syndrome and cachexia represent two poles of metabolic abnormalities that may relate to systemic inflammatio...
